Class Information, Dance Style Info & Proper Dance Attire 2011/2012 Season

CLASS INFORMATION
Every year we try new things in hopes to develop and grow the studio, this was the first year we offered two different programs “technique classes” and “recital classes.” The program was a huge success and we will be offering it once again next year. The idea between the classes is described below.
TECHNIQUE CLASSES:Focus will be on proper technique, flexibility, strength, stamina and musicality will be emphasized in these classes. Short combinations will be learned to assist students in the ability top pick up choregraphy and combine the technique they have learned with stylized moves. Technique classes do not have a performance piece and will not perform in our year end recital.
RECITAL CLASSES: The focus is on performance. Students will be learning basic technique but the majority of the class will focus on routine, stage presence etc. Recital classes may have a wide variety of age groups and ability. This is because these classes are performance based, and teachers can work with different ages and levels to create a dynamic performance piece. Recital classes perform at our year end recital.
*For students taking both technique and recital class - we will have a reduced rate for the 2nd class. Please see the office regarding multiple classes for a reduced price in 2011/2012.

COMPETITIVE/RESTRICTED: -These classes are for students to compete and perform throughout the year. They must be available from September to June to participate in a variety of dance shows and competitions. These students must be committed and dedicated. They will also have the wonderful opportunity to also do solos, duos, and trios if desired. In order to participate in a Competitive class, students must take at least two technique classes.

LEVELS:

Beginner 0 - 2 years training

Intermediate 3 - 5 years training

Advanced 6 + years training

*Years of training is a general outline to assist you in finding the right class for your dance needs. Sometimes teachers will request students’ stay at the same level, or be moved to another level.*

EXAMINATIONS

We are proud to have mentored some of our students through the Al Gilbert Tap & Jazz Examinations with much success! We will be bringing these exams back next year, as well as introducing the RAD ballet exams.

THE AL GILBERTexamination is offered in both jazz and tap. These exams are designed as an incentive for the students to strive for their best ability, while being trained in a renowneddance syllabus. We find the students are duly rewarded for their efforts. Report cards and certificates are awarded for students who achieve a Grade of 80 or higher.

ROYAL ACADAMEY OF DANCE is an examination system for ballet. The RAD stresses that each student will excel if they have an achievable goal. This is measured either by an annual RAD Examination or a Presentation Class.

*Students who would like to participate in next year’s exams are able to do so at the instructors’ discretionl Please let us know if this is something of interest to you and your child.

A NOTE ABOUT COMPETITIONS AND FESTIVALS

We cannot guarantee instructors will be present at competitions for the dance numbers they have choreographed. The reason is that instructors typically teach most days of the week, and are unable to leave their work to come to a competition. Though their instructor may not be there, we will try our best to send another instructor or a representative from the studio to the competition to play their music and support them.

We do ask that all competitive students bring a copy of their music to all competitions and performances as a back up, in case their is an emergency where an instructor is unable to make it or a problem arises with the original copy of music.

If a competition or performance runs during the time of a student’s class,we will not make up the class. Unfortunatley, it is not our decision as to how the dance numbers are scheduled in competitions, but we try and work out the best possible solutionswith the schedule we receive.

STYLES OF DANCE OFFERED

A variety of classes/workshops are offered throughout the year. Please call to inquire. Descriptions are available on our website: www.dancinstars.com

FUN PROGRAMS FOR 2011/2012 SEASON

Al Gilbert Dance Syllabus and Dance Examinations

The Al Gilbertexamination system has been the most widely used technique and testing program in North America for the last thirty-five years. The technique has become an accepted standard of systemized dance training throughout the world.

The Al Gilbertprogram provides a foundation in tap and jazz dance upon which any style in either genrem be built. All too often people (this of course includes parents and teachers!) would like to see a child perform contemporary and complex routines well before the student is ready to do so. We all know of the adage, which advises that one must “”. Some dance systems exist which involve much “running” from those who can barely “crawl”. It is neither fair nor responsible to delude students and parents with such lofty ideas, especially when the ideals cannot be realized until the child is two or three years older. The Al Gilbert system wholeheartedly ebraces the notion that immeasurable s from a complex satisfaction is gained from a simple thing done well, and that only frustration results from a complex thing done poorly.

Each examination level is specifically geared towards both the psychological and physicological two most crucial criteria used to govern the demand of the syllabus and to ensure that each student would acquire a sound an proper education in dance.

LUIGI JAZZ TECHNIQUE

After twenty years of acrobatics, singing and dancing experience as a child entertainer, Luigi woke up one day in a hospital bed, unable to move. “You’re paralyzed: you’ll never walk again,” his doctor said. Luigi’s desire to dance again left him no alternative but to create his own ideas of learning to move the body correctly - all the time. He discovered, the hard way, that movement must come totally from the inside out.

Two years after Luigi’s accident, a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film studio talent scout spotted him in a Falcon Studios recital. He was brought to Gene Kelly who hired him for the musical, “On the Town.” Amazingly, Luigi was working the paralyzed side of his body so well that he began an eight-year career as a chorus dancer in such films as “Annie Get Your Gun”, “An American in Paris”, “Singing in the Rain”, “The Band Wagon”, and “White Christmas” to name a few.

The Luigi technique is a profoundly rich system that Luigi developed over nearly a half-century with the following goals:

1 part To train the dancer to stand, balance, and move out into space

1 part To heal and protect the dancer’s body from injury

1 part To help the dancer dance to and with jazz music

Luigi’s technique is timeless. His floor patterns are as intricate and precise as those of a Renaissance dance. Though you can learn the technique and work the exercises at your own pace, it is not an easy technique. It will take time for you to develop the stamina necessary to perform all the exercises with the focused attention that is the goal. The physical, psychological, and spiritual rewards of mastering these exercises are worth the effort.

“Technique is like tuning an instrument: Learn to tune your body just right so that when you go to play, it’s beautiful.” - Luigi

PRODUCTION

A production is a large dance number composed of a variety of different dance styles and scenes to tell one main story. The class is a choregraphy class, which is open to all ages and levels that are interested in a class culminating in a performance. (See class descriptions). There are many different roles from leads to chorus so if you aren’t comfortable with being a lead there is always space for you!

Parents, this is also a great opportunity to dance along side your child!
